On Greek Dub EP, Gavana (Anna Gavanas) has digged even deeper for her roots in Greek rebetiko music. Rebetiko is an urban working class and migrant music style from Athens /Piraeus from the beginning of the 1900s. On the laid-back and sunny Rebetissa dub, Gavana samples a phone conversation with her father -- rebetissa being the female version of the Greek word rebetis, which refers to someone who embodies rebetiko subculture.

The track Before dawn dub was composed by Gavana in Stockholm during the summer of 2020, in exile from Greece. In lockdown with a huge stash of rebetiko records she is reflecting on crisis, perseverance, kick ass times and the healing power of music.

Gavana has been making music since 2004 and Greek Dub is her fifth EPs on the Swedish label Meerkat Recordings. Greek Dub follows up on Gavana’s 2019 EP Greek Acid. Like her previous EPs Malaga Nights, Culture Vulture and Vicious Vibrations, Greek Acid was played by Swedish National Radio’s ”Elektroniskt i P2”. The track El Andaluz from Malaga Nights became a hit in Colombia (!) and the EP was listed as ”hot pick” by Satellite Records in New York. Greek Acid has also been featured as soundtrack for the book “Från Diskofeber till Rejvhysteri” by Anna Gavanas – as well as the current exhibition “Everybody Dance,” which will run for two years at Scenkonstmuseet (Swedish Museum of Performing Arts) in Stockholm, Trondheim and Helsinki.

As a producer, Gavana comes from a non-stop DJ mission since the 1990s: immersed in endless musical explorations forwards, backwards and sideways. Having lived through numerous phases, club cultures and cities -- in Stockholm, New York, Amsterdam, Chicago, Leeds and London -- she is influenced by Greek Rebetiko, Laïko, Epyrotiko and Tsifteleli as well as a broad range of styles
between garage/ house/ techno and dub.
